In the early hours of Saturday, reports emerged of significant explosions rocking Tehran, following claims from Israel that it had carried out a preemptive military action.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, columns of dense smoke were observed billowing over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The type of explosions indicates that this is a missile attack,” one news agency stated, without initially provide additional information.
Background: Rising Strains and Recent Events
The incident occurs against a background of severely escalated tensions in the region. Key developments leading up to this strike include:
- US Military Buildup: A significant build-up of American warships in the Middle East, featuring the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent talks between the United States and Iran on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with suggestions of more talks scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the strike, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face severe consequences.
Iranian Response
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had accused the US of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. Officials dismissed assertions about missile development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation is fluid, with additional reports anticipated as the situation develops.
